In April 2024, the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka was the target of a significant data breach. The attack resulted in the compromise of approximately 2.08 gigabytes of sensitive student information. The leaked data includes a wide array of personal and official documents such as ID cards (both front and back), affidavits, official statements, birth registration documents, department examination documents, bank payment details (including credit card information), personal photos, and student ID card applications. The breach affected between 600 and 700 students, resulting in the exposure of around 6,700 documents.
